A new study of 4,659 masters athletes in the National Senior Games finds that many older competitive athletes maintain high fitness levels with low rates of chronic illness and joint replacements.
Researchers led by Becca D. Jordre of the University of South Dakota developed the Sustained Athlete Fitness Exam (SAFE), a tailored assessment of cardiovascular health, strength, power, flexibility, and balance for adults 50 and older.
Existing senior fitness tests were too easy, so SAFE provides age-specific benchmarks.
Though the full exam requires specialized equipment, two simple at-home tests were identified to help the public gauge their fitness against elite older athletes.
Only 1% scored perfectly on SAFE, showing how demanding these standards are.
The findings challenge assumptions about aging and offer a tool for assessing physical performance in later life.
