Starting November 1, 2025, Northern Ireland will enforce a new Avian Influenza Prevention Zone requiring all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
The rules, aimed at reducing risk during winter bird migration, mandate that wild birds cannot access poultry and captive birds’ food and water, and require regular cleaning and disinfection.
While housing birds or banning gatherings is not currently mandatory, officials stress the importance of vigilance, especially after recent outbreaks led to the culling of around 20,000 chickens in County Tyrone.
Similar measures are being implemented in the Republic of Ireland.
Authorities emphasize that early detection and strong biosecurity are critical to protecting animal health, the poultry industry, and the broader agri-food sector.
