Welland’s St. George Park will be transformed into a wetland next year, with construction set to begin in spring or summer 2026.
The project, led by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, will replace a shallow concrete pond with a 0.7-hectare, two-metre-deep pond surrounded by native plants and a gravel walking trail.
The effort aims to restore habitat and improve watershed health, part of the NPCA’s 25-year regional wetland restoration initiative.
Funding is being sought from the Niagara Community Foundation, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and federal programs.
A draft agreement is under review, with final designs and quotes pending.
