New Zealand warns against eating shellfish from Taranaki coast due to deadly toxins; cooking won’t help, but gutted pāua, crab, crayfish, and finfish may be safe.
New Zealand Food Safety warns against collecting or eating shellfish from the Taranaki coast, from Cape Egmont to Albatross Point, due to dangerous levels of paralytic shellfish toxins linked to a harmful algal bloom.
Affected species include mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, and pūpū; cooking does not remove the risk.
Symptoms like numbness, paralysis, and respiratory failure can appear within minutes to hours.
Pāua, crab, and crayfish may be safe if the gut is fully removed; finfish are unaffected but should be gutted.
No illnesses have been reported.
The public is urged to check alerts via the NZFS website, app, or beach signs.
