Jury selection ends for Judge Gil Self’s trial over alleged misuse of $146K in county funds.
Jury selection has concluded for the trial of suspended Lauderdale County Judge Gil Self, with 12 jurors and four alternates chosen after five days of deliberation.
The trial, set to begin Monday in the courthouse where Self once served, follows his 2024 indictment on 16 counts of using his office for personal or family gain, one count of false representation, and one count of perjury.
Charges stem from an audit revealing over $146,000 in county funds used for personal expenses, including a sofa, golf clubs, guns, alcohol, and a job for his son without approval.
Self, who denies all allegations, faces up to 20 years in prison and fines totaling $50,000 per charge.
His defense argues the case is politically motivated and that the term “personal use” lacks a clear legal definition, but the motion to dismiss was denied.
Opening statements are scheduled for Monday.
