A humpback whale named Astroboy, thought to be migrating from Hawaii, was freed from about 140 meters of poly-steel rope off Vancouver Island on October 22, 2025, by Fisheries and Oceans Canada officers.
The team, training for marine rescues, responded to a report from a whale-watching company and used a satellite tag on the gear to help loosen and remove much of the rope.
The whale was released unharmed.
