General Motors plans to launch “eyes-off” driving with its Super Cruise system on select highways starting in 2028, marking a shift to Level 3 autonomy. The feature, initially available in the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ electric SUV, will allow drivers to engage in tasks like reading or working without constant attention monitoring. Using advanced sensors including cameras, radar, and LiDAR, the system will detect objects up to four football fields ahead and operate in poor weather. GM emphasizes safety, aiming to reduce reaction times from seconds to milliseconds. Drivers must remain in the seat and ready to take over. The technology builds on Super Cruise’s 1.1 million kilometers of crash-free operation since 2017.
