FDA authorizes Credelio for treating deadly screwworm in dogs near U.S.-Mexico border.
The FDA has granted its first emergency use authorization for an animal drug, approving Elanco’s Credelio tablets to treat New World screwworm in dogs and puppies.
The move follows a public health emergency declaration by Health and Human Services in August 2025, as the parasitic fly, which can cause severe tissue damage, has re-emerged near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Credelio, originally approved for fleas and ticks, shows promise in treating infestations, though it may cause neurologic side effects.
The authorization is temporary and limited to prescription use by veterinarians.
