Exxon Mobil sues California over climate disclosure laws it says violate its free speech rights.
Exxon Mobil has sued California over two 2023 climate disclosure laws, Senate Bills 253 and 261, which require large companies to report greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks.
The company argues the mandates violate its First Amendment rights by forcing it to adopt reporting frameworks it deems misleading and biased against large firms.

California’s laws require companies with over $1 billion in revenue to report direct and indirect emissions, and those with over $500 million to disclose climate risks and mitigation strategies.
While major corporations like Apple and Microsoft support the laws, groups including the Chamber of Commerce oppose them as burdensome.
California officials have not commented on the legal action.
