D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton was scammed in a $4,400 HVAC fraud, sparking debate over her fitness for office.
Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.’s nonvoting congressional delegate, was reportedly scammed by individuals posing as HVAC workers who charged nearly $4,400 to her credit card for unperformed services.
A police report cited her as having early-stage dementia, a claim her office disputed, stating the assessment was based on an unqualified assumption and that she has no caretaker.
The incident was reported by Jacqueline Pelt, Norton’s campaign treasurer and longtime aide, who reviewed security footage and canceled the cards.
No arrests have been made, and the case is being treated as felony fraud.
Norton, 88, plans to seek reelection in 2026 amid growing scrutiny over her fitness for office and recent absences during heightened federal security in D.C.
