Wisconsin has recorded its first Safe Haven baby box surrender at a Racine fire station, marking a milestone since the state’s 2023 law allowed anonymous, safe surrender of newborns up to 72 hours old.
The infant, found in good health, was immediately attended to by emergency responders and placed under child protective services, with adoption proceedings now underway.
The climate-controlled box, installed in December 2024, is part of seven such devices across Wisconsin, designed to prevent infant abandonment and provide a life-saving, judgment-free option for parents in crisis.
