Whakatāne’s Resilience Café gets funding to expand hours and staff, part of a national plan to boost rural mental health support.
Whakatāne’s Resilience Café, a community-run mental health support space, has received government funding to expand its hours and staffing.
It will now operate from 7am to 7pm Wednesday through Friday and 7am to 3pm on Saturdays, with capacity doubling to 31 people.
The funding will support hiring at least two additional peer support specialists.
Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey announced the boost during the Rural Health Roadshow’s final stop, highlighting peer-led, non-clinical spaces as key to improving mental health access.
The expansion is part of a broader government plan to strengthen crisis response and support rural communities, with six new crisis recovery cafés planned by June 2026.
