The USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial seeks 1961 “Save Our Ship” campaign contributors to preserve their stories for a digital archive.
The USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial is seeking former participants of the 1961 “Save Our Ship” campaign, which raised over $300,000 through donations from North Carolina schoolchildren and families to prevent the battleship’s scrapping.
Now, the memorial is inviting those who contributed—often using lunch money or piggy bank savings—to share stories, photos, or videos for a digital archive and future exhibits.
The effort, which helped bring the ship to Wilmington as a tribute to WWII veterans, is being preserved to honor the public’s grassroots role in saving a national treasure.
