UK airport expansion projects are threatening the nation’s legally binding 2050 net zero emissions target, a parliamentary committee has warned.
The Environmental Audit Committee criticized the government’s reliance on unproven technologies like sustainable aviation fuel and its failure to prove that economic benefits outweigh climate and environmental costs.
With no flight limits or demand management measures in place, the committee urged the government to halt major expansions until it can demonstrate how they align with climate goals, especially before updating the outdated 2018 Airports National Policy Statement.
The report highlights ongoing projects at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted, and Luton, warning that expanding capacity without a robust decarbonization strategy risks derailing progress.
Committee chair Toby Perkins emphasized the urgency of credible alternatives, while climate advocates called the expansion agenda reckless and biased toward wealthy travelers.
