The UAE has begun construction on what it calls the world’s first gigascale renewable energy project capable of delivering 1 gigawatt of round-the-clock clean power, combining a 5.2-gigawatt solar plant with a 19-gigawatt-hour battery storage system—the largest of its kind globally.
Led by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, the AED22 billion ($6 billion) project, set for completion by 2027, will use advanced technologies like AI-driven forecasting and grid-forming capabilities to overcome solar intermittency.
It aims to provide reliable, low-cost clean energy, avoid 5.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, create over 10,000 jobs, and support growing sectors like artificial intelligence.
Officials describe it as a global blueprint for sustainable, dispatchable renewable power.
