The Trump administration finalized plans to open Alaska’s 1.5 million-acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain to oil and gas drilling, reversing Biden-era protections and enabling at least four lease sales over the next decade.
The move, announced by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, also reinstated canceled leases, approved the Ambler Road project, and completed a land exchange for a road in Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.
While supported by Alaska leaders and some Indigenous groups for economic benefits, the decision faces strong opposition from the Gwich’in people and environmentalists who warn of harm to wildlife and sacred lands.
