Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment in November 2024, requiring voters to be U.S. citizens, effective immediately.
Texas voters approved Proposition 16 in November 2024, a constitutional amendment clarifying that only U.S. citizens aged 18 or older can vote in state and local elections.
The measure, which passed with about 70% support, enshrines citizenship as a voting requirement in the state constitution, reinforcing existing laws that prohibit noncitizens from voting.
It does not change voter registration rules or affect citizens’ rights.
The amendment was backed by Republican leaders and proponents who said it strengthens election integrity, though critics noted noncitizen voting is extremely rare and already illegal.
Early voting ended October 31, and ballots were due by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
