Tetsuya Yamagami's trial begins over the 2022 assassination of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe at a campaign rally.
The trial of Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, accused of killing former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a campaign rally in Nara on July 8, 2022, begins October 28 at the Nara District Court, with a verdict expected January 21.
Yamagami is expected to plead guilty to murder, illegal firearm possession, and related charges.
Prosecutors say he targeted Abe due to a grudge against the Unification Church, which he blamed for his family’s financial downfall after his mother made large donations.
Investigators allege he tested his homemade weapons at a facility linked to the church.
The court will hear testimony from 12 witnesses, including Yamagami’s mother and a religious scholar.
Yamagami was found mentally competent after a six-month evaluation.
The trial coincides with the swearing-in of Sanae Takaichi, Abe’s protégé, as Japan’s first female prime minister.
