On Thursday, Stratford, Ontario, conducted a live emergency drill simulating a tornado’s aftermath on Romeo Street, involving nearly 30 police, fire, and paramedic personnel, along with student actors portraying victims.
The exercise, part of annual provincially mandated training, included a flipped vehicle, a school bus on its side with trapped students, and downed trees, testing real-time response coordination.
Deputy Fire Chief Richard Anderson, the city’s new emergency management co-ordinator, led on-site operations with support from a mobile command unit, while an emergency operations centre at the Stratford Rotary Complex coordinated resources, including public works, hydro crews, and hospital readiness for mass casualties.
An outside evaluator assessed the drill, which took four months to plan, to identify strengths and areas for improvement in communication and crisis response under pressure.
