Seventeen individuals in Aiken County, many without families or financial means, were honored in a pauper burial ceremony on October 24, 2025, with their cremated remains laid to rest in a dignified service.
Organized by the sheriff’s office and community volunteers, the event included a funeral, bagpipe music performed by the Sheriff’s Office Pipes and Drums for the 15th consecutive year, and a communal tribute to those who died without resources or kin.
Attendees included relatives and community members, some of whom came to honor deceased loved ones they only recently learned of.
The tradition, believed to date back to the 1870s, continues to ensure all lives are remembered with respect.
