Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board trustee Mark Watson has resigned after failing to repay $12,370 in expenses from a 2024 Italy trip funded by the board, which included business-class flights and a Michelin-star meal.
While three other trustees repaid their shares by the May 23 deadline, Watson repaid only $1,216.
The Ontario government, led by Education Minister Paul Calandra, demanded nearly $50,000 in total repayments and introduced legislation to allow removal of trustees for misconduct.
The board will decide whether to appoint a replacement or hold a by-election.
The trip involved purchasing artwork for Catholic schools, with most pieces expected to be installed in new schools in Brantford and Caledonia.
