Ruth Chepngetich banned 3 years for doping after testing positive for banned diuretic HCTZ.
Ruth Chepngetich, the women’s marathon world record-holder with a time of 2:09:56, has been banned for three years after testing positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) on March 14, 2025.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) found her explanation for taking her housemaid’s medication lacking credibility and noted suspicious messages on her phone linked to doping.
Though her supplements tested negative, HCTZ levels were 190 times above the detection threshold.
The ban, effective April 19, 2025, applies only to results after the positive test, preserving her world record.
The AIU continues investigating her phone data, and the case may be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
