Quilen Blackwell’s Southside Blooms turns Chicago’s vacant lots into sustainable flower farms, employing youth and shipping nationwide.
In Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, Quilen Blackwell’s nonprofit Southside Blooms has turned vacant lots into six off-grid flower farms since 2017, using sustainable methods and employing 25 local youth.
The initiative, which grows zinnias and amaranth without chemicals, delivers bouquets locally and ships nationwide, offering jobs and career skills in farming, logistics, and design.
Inspired by underused land and high costs of imported flowers, Blackwell and his wife Hannah aim to expand nationally, turning urban flower farming into a model for economic revitalization in underserved cities.
