Oklahoma’s new law mandates 85% prison time for murder accessories, ending early release, after a convicted man's swift release sparked outrage.
Oklahoma’s new Lauria and Ashley’s Law, effective November 1, 2025, requires those convicted of accessory to first- or second-degree murder to serve at least 85% of their sentence before parole eligibility, eliminating sentence reductions through credits.
The law, named after two 16-year-old girls murdered in 1999, was prompted by the early release of Ronnie Busick, convicted as an accessory in their case.
It aims to ensure greater accountability for aiding violent crimes and provides closure for victims’ families.
