Oklahoma’s new education chief will review social studies standards blocked by the Supreme Court due to disputed claims and transparency issues.
Oklahoma’s new state superintendent, Lindel Fields, plans to review and likely revise the state’s controversial social studies standards, which were adopted earlier this year under his predecessor and are currently blocked from implementation by the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
The standards, which include disputed claims about the 2020 election and COVID-19’s origin, as well as a requirement to teach Bible stories, face legal challenges over transparency and potential misinformation.
Fields, appointed to finish Ryan Walters’ term, said the court’s pause allows time for a 60-day review, public input, and changes to ensure content is educationally appropriate and accurate.
