A 2025 North Sea collision between two ships caused a fuel spill, fire, and one death, leading to civil and criminal trials.
A civil trial over a March 10, 2025, collision between the Portuguese-flagged container ship Solong and the anchored US tanker Stena Immaculate in the North Sea is expected to begin no earlier than October 2026. The incident, about 10.2 nautical miles off the East Yorkshire coast, caused the loss of over 17,500 barrels of jet fuel and triggered a fire. Both the owner and manager of the Stena Immaculate filed a civil claim against the Solong’s operator. Thirty-six crew members were rescued, but one Filipino sailor, Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, remains missing and presumed dead. The Solong’s captain, Vladimir Motin, 59, of Russia, has denied a charge of gross negligence manslaughter and is set to stand trial in January 2026.
