Niger Delta leaders urge ex-President Jonathan to back Tinubu’s 2027 re-election, citing regional support and shifting sentiment.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is facing pressure from Niger Delta leaders, including ex-militant leader Tompolo, to drop his 2027 presidential ambitions and back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
A October 16 meeting at Jonathan’s Otuoke home, attended by Tompolo, Chief Kestin Pondi, and Joshua Maciver, was described as politically motivated, despite Jonathan’s claim it focused on peace.
Sources say Tompolo urged Jonathan to support Tinubu, citing shifting public sentiment and lack of regional backing if he runs.
Tompolo, who made his first public appearance in over a decade, emphasized broad support for Tinubu, including from Jonathan’s wife and Bayelsa’s APC governor.
Jonathan acknowledged the advice and said he would reflect before deciding.
