New Zealand is investing $12.6 million to add seven new emergency helicopters to its air ambulance fleet, bringing the total of new or near-new aircraft to 16.
The upgrades, following a prior $14.7 million investment, aim to replace the country’s aging fleet—previously the oldest in the developed world—with improved safety, weather resilience, fuel efficiency, and standardized models to streamline maintenance and training.
Four helicopters are already in service, with more expected in Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Taranaki, Auckland, and Northland by early 2026.
