A new trail marks the 1843 forced removal of 600 Wyandot people from Ohio, correcting past misrepresentations and honoring their resilience.
A University of Cincinnati-led project has launched the Wyandot Removal Trail, a seven-year effort to install 13 historical markers tracing the 1843 forced removal of over 600 Wyandot people from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to Cincinnati and beyond.
The first marker, unveiled in 2025 near the historic Wyandot Mission Church—returned to the Wyandotte Nation in 2019—corrects past inaccuracies by rejecting terms like “departure” and “journey” that minimized the violence of the event.
Developed with final input from tribal leaders, the trail emphasizes the Wyandot people’s enduring presence and cultural resilience.
