A victims’ group in Italy, Rete l’Abuso, says nearly 4,400 people, mostly minors and male, were abused by Catholic priests since 2020, based on survivor accounts, court records, and media reports.
The group identified 1,250 suspected abuse cases involving priests, nuns, and church-affiliated staff, with only 76 priests facing church trials, 17 suspended, seven reassigned, and 18 defrocked or resigned.
The Italian Bishops Conference did not comment, while the Vatican criticized Italy’s low response to safeguarding surveys.
Pope Leo has urged bishops to address misconduct, continuing efforts started by Pope Francis.
