Michigan seeks $23.6M back from Gotion after EV battery plant project failed due to delays, opposition, and unmet goals.
Michigan is seeking to reclaim $23.6 million in state incentives from Gotion Inc. after its planned electric vehicle battery plant in northern Michigan stalled due to delays, legal challenges, and local opposition.
The project, backed with nearly $175 million in state funds and intended to create over 2,000 jobs, failed to meet milestones, prompting the state to declare Gotion in default.
The state also plans to recover $26.4 million in unused grant funds and will not disburse an additional $125 million.
Opposition arose over environmental concerns, transparency issues, and national security worries tied to Gotion’s Chinese ownership and government links.
Republican lawmakers and residents, including those in Green Township, criticized the project, leading to the recall of supportive officials.
Gotion has not responded to the state’s demands, and the project is now officially canceled.
