A man died saving his niece at a zebra crossing; the driver, speeding, got a suspended sentence.
James Moyles, 33, died on February 20, 2024, in Ballina, County Mayo, after pushing his four-year-old niece to safety at a zebra crossing before being struck by a car driven by Keith O'Brien, 49, who was speeding at 50.8 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
O'Brien, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, received a 30-month suspended sentence and a 10-year driving ban.
CCTV showed the crossing lasted just 2.46 seconds before impact.
Moyles, a devoted uncle and community volunteer, suffered fatal head injuries and died the next day.
His family, grieving his loss, is urging drivers to slow down and calling for speed ramps on the stretch of road where he died, highlighting that 312 people have died on Irish roads in 22 months.
They hope his heroic act will inspire systemic changes to protect vulnerable road users.
