Liberia agrees to take Salvadoran man wrongfully deported, but court challenge continues.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says Liberia has agreed to accept Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national wrongfully deported to El Salvador in March, for removal by October 31, citing diplomatic assurances about his treatment.
Abrego Garcia, who faces human smuggling charges in Tennessee and has pleaded not guilty, was returned to the U.S. in June and has been detained since August.
A Maryland judge has blocked his deportation, and his attorneys argue the plan is arbitrary and harmful, noting Costa Rica has offered to accept him as a refugee.
Previous attempts to deport him to Ghana, Uganda, and Eswatini were abandoned.
The case underscores ongoing challenges in the U.S. deportation system.
