Under established convention, the senior-most judge, Kant, is expected to be appointed as the 53rd CJI, serving from November 24, 2025, to February 9, 2027.
Born in 1962 in Haryana, Kant has served on the Supreme Court since 2019 and has played key roles in landmark rulings on Article 370, free speech, corruption, gender equality, environmental protection, and national security, including cases involving Pegasus spyware, the OROP scheme, and voter exclusion in Bihar.
