France has issued a third arrest warrant for former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, now in Russia, over alleged 2013 chemical attacks in Adra, Douma, and Eastern Ghouta that used sarin gas.
The warrant, filed by French magistrates, charges Assad with complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes, replacing a prior one annulled due to his immunity.
A separate warrant was issued for Talal Makhlouf, a former Syrian Republican Guard commander.
The move follows previous warrants for a 2017 bombing and a 2012 press center attack.
Despite Syria’s new leader seeking Assad’s extradition during a visit to Moscow, no public request was made, and Russia confirmed Assad remains under its protection.
