Four Alberta officers cleared after shooting man with BB gun mistaken for real weapon.

Alberta’s police watchdog has cleared four Strathcona County RCMP officers of wrongdoing after they shot Sean Bennett, 54, during a July 28, 2025, incident where he pointed a black BB gun at them outside an RCMP detachment. The weapon lacked an orange tip, making it appear real. Officers fired when Bennett, who later said he was attempting suicide, approached and raised the gun. ASIRT found the officers acted reasonably under immediate threat, with no way to know it was fake. Bennett faces charges including assault with a weapon and using an imitation firearm, and is expected to enter a plea on October 29.
