A federal grand jury is probing if $10M from a Medicaid settlement was misused by First Lady Casey DeSantis’ charity to fund anti-marijuana political efforts.
A federal grand jury in Tallahassee is investigating whether $10 million from a $67 million Medicaid settlement with Centene was improperly used by the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity led by First Lady Casey DeSantis, to fund political efforts opposing the 2024 recreational marijuana amendment.
The funds were split between two anonymous "dark money" groups, which transferred $8.5 million to a political committee tied to James Uthmeier, former chief of staff to Governor Ron DeSantis and now attorney general.
The Florida House, led by Rep. Alex Andrade, is probing the matter, focusing on Uthmeier and the foundation’s attorney, Jeff Aaron.
DeSantis and the DeSantises deny any wrongdoing.
The probe raises concerns about the use of public settlement funds for political purposes, especially amid broader efforts to block other ballot initiatives, including abortion access.
No charges have been filed, and the grand jury’s findings remain pending.
