Chipotle agrees to $246,000 settlement over gift card cash-out violations in California.
Chipotle has agreed to a $246,000 settlement over allegations it violated California law by not allowing customers to cash out gift cards with balances under $10.
The settlement, reached in Ventura County Superior Court, includes $145,467 in civil penalties, $88,533 in investigative costs, and $12,000 in restitution.
Chipotle, which denies wrongdoing, must create a website portal at chipotle.com/gift-card-cashback to process refunds for balances under $10, and new gift cards must include notices about cash-out rights.
The company cannot use redemption data for marketing without consent.
The case was led by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office with support from other California agencies.
