Chinese scientists discover a new non-venomous snake species in Sichuan’s protected areas.
Chinese scientists have discovered a new non-venomous snake species, the western China mountain snake (Plagiopholis pluvialis), in Sichuan Province’s West China Rain Zone, including the Giant Panda National Park and Mount Emei.
Found between 2020 and 2025, the 80-centimeter-long snake has a distinctive inverted V-shaped neck pattern, is diurnal, and feeds on earthworms and slugs.
Identified through genetic and physical analysis, it is the first new species in its genus in nearly a century.
The discovery, published in September in Zoosystematics and Evolution, highlights the region’s high biodiversity and the conservation value of protected areas.
