China advances draft national environmental code with new pollution and sustainability provisions.
Chinese lawmakers are reviewing two new sections of a draft national environmental code during the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress session, advancing the legislation's progress.
The code, which aims to become China’s second formal statutory code after the Civil Code, includes provisions on pollution prevention, rural waste management, agricultural input regulation, heavy metals and volatile organic compound controls, groundwater assessments, and water pollution from inland vessels.
A section on legal liability addresses ecological protection, green development, and issues like light pollution.
The first three sections were previously reviewed in September 2025, with the full code expected to unify and strengthen China’s environmental laws if adopted.
