Canada grants Horizon Aircraft $2M to develop icy-weather eVTOL tech for safer, greener aviation.
Horizon Aircraft received a $2 million non-dilutive grant from Canada’s INSAT program to advance its $10.5 million CRYSTAL project, developing an all-weather eVTOL propulsion system for operation in extreme conditions, including icing environments.
The project, with partners University of Toronto and Certification Center Canada, focuses on ice detection and protective technologies like ice-phobic and electrothermal coatings, aiming for Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) certification on the Cavorite X7 prototype.
If 4% of the global helicopter fleet were replaced, the company estimates a 2.6 billion-pound annual CO2 reduction, 75% lower operating costs, and faster speeds.
The initiative supports safer, more sustainable aviation for emergency response, defense, and cargo.
