A British Columbia bill to ban land acknowledgements in public institutions failed its first reading, with 88 out of 93 MLAs opposing it.
Introduced by One B.C.
MLA Dallas Brodie, the legislation aimed to prohibit statements seen as denying Crown sovereignty or assigning collective guilt based on race or history.
Conservative MLAs Harman Bhangu and Heather Maahs, along with former Conservative Tara Armstrong and Independent Jordan Kealy, supported the bill.
However, Indigenous Relations Minister Spencer Chandra Herbert and Indigenous Conservative House Leader A’aliya Warbus strongly opposed it, calling it harmful to reconciliation and an attack on truth-telling.
Warbus, visibly emotional, said the bill undermined free speech and ignored Indigenous history.
The vote revealed deep divisions within the Conservative party and affirmed continued use of land acknowledgements in B.C.
