Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, a two-time national champion and NFL veteran, has launched his campaign for lieutenant governor in Alabama’s 2026 Republican primary.
The Mobile native cited the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a catalyst, emphasizing his commitment to defending Alabama’s conservative values and his desire to bring outsider leadership to state government.
McCarron, who played for Alabama from 2011 to 2013 and in the NFL for nine seasons, joins a competitive GOP field including Secretary of State Wes Allen and Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate.
He positioned himself as a strategic ally to Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor, and highlighted his faith, family, and leadership experience as qualifications for public service.
The primary is set for May 19, 2026.
