A 28-year-old Indian influencer lost $60,000 to a fake copyright scam impersonating Instagram enforcers.
A 28-year-old Instagram influencer and software engineer from Jabalpur, Azim Ahmed, lost ₹50 lakh to a cyber extortion scheme involving fake copyright strikes and threats of account suspension.
Authorities say it’s the first case of its kind in the city, with fraudsters impersonating copyright enforcers and using fake emails and calls to demand payments.
Ahmed, who manages 96 accounts with 57 million followers, paid over a year due to fear of losing his online presence.
The Jabalpur Cyber Cell is investigating, working with Instagram to trace the fake strikes, which exploited the platform’s automated systems.
