A woman was rescued in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge after getting lost on unmarked trails, prompting calls for better signage.
A woman was rescued Tuesday evening in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge after becoming lost on unofficial, unmarked trails near the Sheltowee Trace and Gladie Creek.
She contacted 911 around 5:30 p.m., disoriented and having hiked for nearly five hours.
Rescuers located her via a locator link on a cliff above the trail, reached her by UTV and a mile-long hike, and found her uninjured.
This marks the second similar incident in the area within a year, prompting officials to seek public input on improving trail signage and safety measures.
Authorities urge hikers to use navigation tools, carry maps and supplies, inform someone of their plans, and avoid unofficial trails.
