West Virginia official urges high school seniors to register to vote ahead of November election.
West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner visited Brooke High School to encourage 17-year-olds to register to vote, noting that five recent local elections ended in ties decided by chance.
Under state law, teens can register if they’ll turn 18 before the November election.
Warner highlighted the 26th Amendment’s passage in 1971 and shared that over 1,700 students statewide registered during National Voter Registration Month.
At Brooke High, about 185 seniors are eligible to register in person or online.
Election officials reminded students to bring ID, and forms were available for those needing them.
Warner emphasized nonpartisan civic engagement, urging students to learn about parties through official platforms.
Both Warner and Brooke County clerk Dale Butler stressed voting as a vital democratic duty.
