Jay Jones, Virginia’s Democratic attorney general nominee, is under criminal investigation after a special prosecutor was appointed to examine whether he improperly fulfilled his 1,000-hour community service requirement for a 2022 reckless driving conviction.
Jones, convicted for speeding at 116 mph, completed 500 hours through his own political action committee, Meet Our Moment, and 500 through the Virginia NAACP, raising concerns about the legality and ethics of using a partisan group for court-ordered service.
The probe was launched after the original prosecutor recused himself due to a conflict of interest.
Jones’ campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
The investigation, which also scrutinizes his past offensive text messages, has intensified scrutiny of his candidacy as Republican incumbent Jason Miyares gains momentum in polling.
