Victoria approves $1.2M pilot to install 100 EV chargers on utility poles by year-end.
A $1.2 million pilot project allowing three Victorian power companies to install up to 100 electric vehicle chargers on utility poles will move forward after regulatory approval, despite opposition from energy and charging firms.
The chargers, rated at 22 kilowatts, will be owned and maintained until mid-2031, with third-party operators setting usage fees.
The project, which includes nine conditions to ensure transparency and consumer benefits, aims to expand EV infrastructure in areas with high adoption and limited off-street parking.
Ten trial sites will launch by year-end, chosen based on community needs and usage patterns.
The initiative follows a 20% increase in Australia’s fast-charging network, now exceeding 1,200 locations.
