Venezuela claims 5,000 Russian missiles for Caribbean defense amid rising U.S.-Venezuela tensions.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed during a televised ceremony that Venezuela possesses 5,000 Russian-made Igla-S portable surface-to-air missiles, strategically placed to defend against U.S. military activity in the Caribbean.
The announcement follows increased U.S. military operations in the region, including strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels and the deployment of stealth aircraft and B-52 bombers.
The U.S. has destroyed at least eight vessels since September, killing at least 34 people, and labeled Latin American drug cartels as terrorist groups, a move drawing international criticism.
Tensions have escalated further with Colombia recalling its ambassador to Washington and the U.S. raising the bounty for Maduro’s arrest to $50 million.
