Utah Sen. Daniel Thatcher, the state’s first third-party lawmaker, plans to resign before the 2026 session, paving the way for a groundbreaking, publicly driven selection process.
Instead of a party appointment, all voters in his district can participate in an online preference poll to choose his replacement, a first in Utah history.
The Forward Party launched the process, requiring candidates to meet residency, registration, and pledge requirements, with applications due by November 14, 2025.
The winner will serve until January 1, 2027, and must run for reelection in 2026.
Thatcher, who left the Republican Party over ideological differences, cited a desire for greater transparency and voter engagement.
His resignation hinges on the process’s success.
